Low Dose Dexamethasone Suppression Test (code 275 to IDEXX)
-used to diagnose Cushings syndrome (overactivity of the adrenal gland).
-can be used to differentiate Pituitary-Dependent Hyperadrenocorticism from Adrenal Hyperadrenocorticism.
-the patient must not be on any exogenous steroids at the time of testing (oral prednisone, Depo-Medrol inj.)
Three blood samples are required.
The initial blood sample is taken immediately, tube labeled "PRE."
Then an injection of 0.01 mg/kg Dexamethasone SP (3 mg/ml) is administered IV. (done by DVM)
A second blood sample is taken 4 hours after administration of the Dexamethasone SP, tube labeled "4 HR POST."
A third blood sample is taken 8 hours after administration of the Dexamethasone SP, tube labeled "8 HR POST."
Charges for this test are the lab line item. The Dexamethasone is not charged separately.
ACTH Stimulation Test (code 119 to IDEXX)
-used to monitor response to medication for Cushing syndrome — typically Vetoryl (name brand) or Trilostane (compounded).
-test should be performed 4 to 6 hours after administration of medication, when possible.
Two blood samples are required.
The initial blood sample is taken immediately, tube labeled "PRE."
Then an injection of 0.25 ml Cortrosyn (cosyntropin) is administered IV. (done by DVM)
A second blood sample is taken 1 hour after administration of the Cortrosyn, tube labeled "1 HR POST."
Charges for this test are the lab line item and the Cortrosyn injection.
